Over the course of any construction project, there are sure to be plenty of moving parts - and people - involved. Each has a specific role in advancing the ball on your addition or remodel.
Choosing fixtures, finishes and accessories can be the most fun and frustrating part of a construction project. Deciding on which paint color, sink faucet or tile you’ll be living with “forever” can be daunting. There are too many choices, and it all feels so final.
When it comes to residential framing (at least in my part of the world) a 2x4 is a 2x4, roof trusses are roof trusses, and wall sheathing is wall sheathing. Whether you get it from 84 Lumber, Home Depot, or TW Perry, you are getting basically the exact same product. As long as you're careful to check the boards for excessive bowing and cupping (see what those terms mean here), you are good to go.
When it comes to deciding which material to cover the exterior of your home or addition, there are many factors which come into play. If this was a Family Feud episode, the number-one answer would be BUDGET! But don’t forget other factors, such as aesthetics, durability, insulation value, and maintenance.
Any homeowner that prides himself or herself in being a savvy bargain-hunter will often attack the allowance budget in their contract with the fervor of a game show contestant on HGTV. While it’s a great thing to find those bargains and come in under budget, sometimes a lower price means a lower quality item.
Embarking on a home improvement project involves several different steps. You have to decide on what you want, meet with potential contractors, interpret bids, and decide who will build what, and for how much. When all of this is said and done, there is one final (okay, maybe not final) hurdle to jump: the contract.
Whether we call it a master suite, owner’s suite, or owner’s bedroom, the fact remains that most of us want the room in which we spend a third of our lives to be a spectacular oasis.
